2025 has been another  successful year for GIG!  Business as usual continued with events, webinar recordings, our Awards, the blog, social media, email newsletters, and providing a bursary for CILIP Conference attendance. We also maintained the basics: monitoring membership numbers, core financial and governance reporting, and establishing links with the refreshed CILIP Member Networks Team. Thank you to GIG committee colleagues for making all this  happen, while evolving and innovating, and doing so in a such a professional, dedicated, collegiate and fun way.

We also welcomed and thanked our new committee member and Digital Champion Windy Marisa – who is doing an amazing job! And thanked Foteini Karagianni, our former blog editor and Maria Thanigasalam, our former digital champion, who both stood down from committee in 2025.

Not forgetting SCOOP, our subgroup, who do amazing work overseeing the official publishing landscape, effectively lobbying and standing-up for users and access. Special thanks to Steven Hartshorne for making SCOOP happen, and a reminder that SCOOP still needs a Chair. Could this be your new golden opportunity … contact us if you are interested!

But in 2025 we also undertook some innovative, new activities….

  • We had a strong focus on the experiences of GKIM colleagues undertaking Professional Registration. Thank you to Naeem Yar for running so effectively with this, and engaging with key colleagues in CILIP, but also some inspirational case studies.  These activity undoubtedly changed views both within CILIP and for our members undertaking, or contemplating, professional registration.

  • We also developed a focus on supporting colleagues working in Defence KIM roles, work which is now starting to gain some traction.  Thank you to Charlotte Porter and Becky Dorsett!

  • We supported CILIP in monitoring data losses caused by the US Administration changes, and impacts of AI on the Public Sector. These were  great ways to start working with Louis, CILIP’s Chief Executive.

The AGM was also a brief opportunity to look ahead. CILIP is gearing up to have a strong profile for GKIM in both 2026 and 2027, with government knowledge and information management (GKIM) colleagues as CILIP Presidents. The IFLA World Congress next year may provide opportunities to showcase GKIM in the UK. Newly developing links with the Government Libraries Section from the Library Association of Ireland are very exciting too. GIG will be contributing to this strong focus on GKIM over the coming months!

Why not join us?

Thank you again to our dedicated Committee Members! Why not join us? We currently have two vacancies for our Secretary and blog editor. Committee is purposeful, very supportive and good fun. Committee membership could be a great aid to your professional development and progression. It looks great on your CV! GIG also welcome interest from members seeking to support us in other ways: e.g.  host an event or visit; write a blog posting; or help us with a piece of project work; or in supporting SCOOP! Please contact chair.gig@cilip.org.uk if you are interested or would like to find out more.
