CILIP Government Information Group webinar: "Changing Minds, Changing Practice: Embedding Information Literacy in a Military Environment", Tuesday 17 November, 12pm - 1pm

The Government Information Group can announce their fifth and final event of 2026, featuring speakers from the Joint Services Command and Staff College's Hobson Library. The military education environment is unique, but the challenges facing libraries are familiar. As the information landscape continues to evolve, libraries are increasingly expected to do more than provide access to resources. They are expected to develop critical thinkers, confident researchers, and independent learners while contributing to broader organisational capability building.

Drawing on practical experience, this session will explore how changing expectations, strengthening stakeholder relationships, embedding a culture of learning, building organisational capability, and promoting learner independence helped reshape both the perception and purpose of the library. Attendees will gain insights into the challenges of organisational change and how defence libraries can position themselves as essential contributors to the Strategic Defence Review via educational success, professional development, and lifelong learning which is adaptive to operational lessons, innovation, and research.

Speakers:

Luke Johnstone, Librarian, Learning and Teaching Team

I began my career as a history researcher before moving into librarianship, working exclusively within Ministry of Defence library services. For the past 13 years, I have been based at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, supporting the research and learning needs of military staff and students.

I currently lead the Learning and Teaching Team within the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) Library, where I have developed and embedded information literacy support across the college. As Course Liaison, I design and deliver information skills training for both staff and students.

I am a Chartered Member of CILIP (MCLIP) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Alongside my core role, I also mentor colleagues across the Defence Academy in achieving FHEA, supporting the development of teaching practice and professional standards.

Thomas Cross, Librarian, Learning and Teaching Team

I began my career in a law library, building a strong foundation in legal research and information skills. I then moved into roles focused on Information Governance and information management, supporting the effective and compliant use of information within organisations. From there, I moved into NHS librarianship, where I supported evidence-based practice and the information needs of healthcare staff. I now work within Ministry of Defence library services, supporting the learning needs of military staff and students.

I am currently part of the Learning and Teaching team within the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) Library. My role includes contributing to the development and delivery of the DLE, supporting collection development across physical and digital resources, and delivering Information Literacy teaching.

I am currently working towards Chartership (MCLIP) and a postgraduate qualification in Education. I also have a strong interest in the use of AI and prompting within a higher education context.

You can register for the session via the webinar's page on Eventbrite.
