Civil Service Live 2024: Support the GKIM Presence

 

Civil Service Live, the annual UK-wide civil service staff learning conference, is just around the corner! This year, as previously, the GKIM (Government Knowledge and Information Management) profession will be providing sessions as part of the formal program and hosting stands in the exhibitions. The GKIM theme for this year is based around preparing for AI.

 

Organisers of the GKIM representation at CSL2024 are seeking volunteers to support most of the locations. If you are interested, please contact your Head of Profession.

 

Supporting the GKIM presence at CSL 2024 is a great way to demonstrate and develop your expertise, share and hear about good practice, network with colleagues from a range of government departments and agencies, challenge yourself in a supportive environment, and promote GKIM while honing your “elevator pitches” ready to take back to your organisation.

 

GIG experience at Civil Service Live

 

Some members of the GIG committee have been involved with CSL in previous years and found it to be an overwhelmingly positive experience.

 

Emily Powell, GIG Member Secretary has this to say about her experience:

"I have supported GKIM in at CSL in London for the past two years on the stand and as a speaker. The organisers really value having a range of people from different grades and experiences involved, and for me it has been a great opportunity to meet and mix with other GKIM professionals across government as well as an opportunity to impart my own experience." 

 

On the stand you get a range of questions from "what is GKIM" to discussions about the future priorities for the profession. If you present, it is as part of a panel, and it is a largely friendly audience who have come to engage positively with the discussion. And of course while volunteering you should also be able to take time out and explore the rest of the event.

 

The ability to have a GKIM presence at all the SCL sessions is dependent on committed volunteers, so please consider getting involved.

Stephen Gregory, GIG Honorary Secretary, also added:

"I attended CSL in Cardiff for the first-time last year and volunteered on the GKIM Profession exhibition stand. I enjoyed meeting people and answering questions on the stand, and found the insights into breadth of GKIM experience and awareness, and the range of questions, fascinating. The preparations for the event, from the GKIM Profession Team, were superb. This meant that there were clear topics for discussion and “conversation openers”, with lots of high-quality, practical supporting information to share with visitors. Volunteering on the stand was also a rare and valued opportunity to work directly alongside GKIM professionals from other government departments and agencies. The informal discussions and networking, that this opportunity enabled, were useful and enjoyable. For me, volunteering for the GKIM Profession was also a great incentive to visit CLS for the first time! So alongside the bonuses of supporting the GKIM Profession it also enabled me to attend an entertaining session on presenting numerical information accurately and clearly."
