CILIP Government Information Group Awards 2024/25

This year GIG has made two joint awards for its Annual and Lifetime Achievement categories. We welcome this opportunity to celebrate the innovation and excellence demonstrated in two recent GKIM contexts, and to acknowledge the significant contributions made by two significant colleagues. Congratulations to our winners, who we hope to see at our 2025 AGM (details to be provided shortly)! We also thank our nominees for their time in crafting their considered and detailed nominations.

Annual Award: Welsh Government (joint award)

The “Year of KIM” campaign is an innovative project for the Welsh Government which raised awareness of important KIM roles including records management, FOI and information literacy. With no additional resource available the team clearly made good use of the comms at their disposal, the intranet, Teams and online events. Success of the project was measured by positive Teams data and the supportive feedback they received.

This project could be used and adapted by OGDs, and the team are looking to build on this work next year so that awareness is maintained.

The panel felt that this was a good fit with the Award criteria and a good example of innovative working across government.

Annual Award: FCDO (joint award)

The FCDO Information Management Team were responsible for implementing the Government Security Classification Policy (GSCP) policy in the Department. They have clearly shown an impressive technical ability and overcome significant problems to make the project work successfully. In the face of initial negative feedback, the team reacted testing the technology across a range of user scenarios and quickly produced FCDO-specific guidance.

There is strong evidence that the team were successful in their approach delivering more than 200 briefings and securing agreement from Civil Service Learning to make the GSCP e-Learning module available on the FCDO's Oracle system.

The panel felt that this project was undoubtedly a major contribution and has wider application.

Lifetime achievement award: Jan Parry (joint award)

Jan has been actively involved in both the profession and the community over several decades, creating a Knowledge Network for government Ministers and working on many other projects such as a tackling gangs programme for the Home Secretary. Most importantly perhaps was her work on the Hillsborough Independent Panel tracing the bereaved relatives of the people who died. After retirement Jan continued to work with CILIP and other library groups such as NGLIS.

In the panel’s view the nomination evidenced a major contribution to the field of government knowledge and information management over the course of Jan’s career.

Lifetime achievement award: Jackie King (joint award)

Jackie has 35 years’ experience working as a librarian and knowledge information professional in the civil service. Her nomination emphasizes Jackie’s support for the civil service values of impartiality and professionalism, as well as a willingness to help customers which is essential for library work. Jackie’s staff management skills are also highly respected in the legal library community, and she is responsible for helping to develop the careers of many librarians and civil service administrators in the Law Commission, Home Office, ACAS among others. The nomination is supported by comments from former colleagues who testify to Jackie’s positive effect on the GKIM community.

The panel felt that Jackie's nomination highlights her ability to develop departmental services in a forward-thinking way, as well as leading with quick thinking and flexibility, and a willingness to invest in others within the Civil Service.
