Just replying to this as I'm a member of the GIG Committee and I'd encourage anyone looking to bolster their capabilities to put themselves forward for these roles. I think people can often hear the word "committee" and think the atmosphere will be a bit stuffy and officious, but since joining the GIG Committee last year that really hasn't been my experience - we're a friendly bunch, and the meetings have an informal and enjoyable feel. My main motivation for joining was to develop new skills I wouldn't normally get to practice in my current job with an eye to progressing in my career, and so far it's delivered: I've gotten the "stretch" I was looking for, built up my confidence and cultivated new abilities which I can apply to my current employment as well as future roles. I feel like I've had the freedom to put my own stamp on my position as Events Co-ordinator, whilst I've also had support from my fellow committee members when I've needed it.
