Webinar "What's it Really Like Working in Government Information?", Thursday 18 May, 11am-12pm

GIG’s second webinar of 2023 is now open for booking.

The idea for this event came about after an analysis of our membership data revealed that a majority of our members work outside the government and armed forces sectors. With this in mind, we thought a webinar giving a flavour of what working with government information entails would be of interest to those of you who are curious about knowledge and information professions in government and might consider moving into the sector – particularly given that those working in the knowledge and information professions within government are often in a paradoxical situation: whilst the work we support is often important, impactful and high profile, our own visibility among fellow information and knowledge professionals is somewhat lower.

A panel of four members of the CILIP Government Information Group's Committee with experience of working in libraries and information and knowledge management inside and outside the Civil Service will be talking about their work with government information, touching upon what it can offer you and the skills that can help you make a move into the sector and answering your questions.

Becky Dorsett currently works as the Deputy Head of Digital and Information Professions within the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). She previously worked in different parts of the library sector before moving into the GKIM profession as an Information Manager which has seen her taken on many different roles within GKIM in different parts of MOD. Her current role supports digital and information professionals and includes supporting professional development, understanding professional frameworks and strategic planning for the future of the professions in MOD and wider government.

Emily Powell is a Service Manager in the Infrastructure and Projects Authority, managing the Government Project Delivery Hub for the Project Delivery profession. She has previously worked in MoD libraries and the National Police Library, and as a Knowledge Manager in the Cabinet Office.

Steven Hartshorne is Secretary of the Sub Committee on Official Publications (SCOOP). SCOOP aims to improve the access to, and availability of, UK official and government publications; to identify problems in the provision of access to UK official publications, in particular their bibliographic control and distribution; to make proposals for possible solutions to problems in the provision of access to UK official publications. It is a subcommittee of CILIP's Government Information Group and is open to anyone with a professional interest in official publications.

Naeem Yar is a Librarian with the Welsh Government. He entered the library sector after spending almost ten years working primarily in administrative roles in research, criminal justice and higher education environments, initially via university and hospital libraries before transitioning into government librarianship at Historic England.

Registration for the webinar is available to CILIP members at this link.
