The GIG Awards 2020

GIG launched its annual award in 1998 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Group's formation and nominations are now invited for the 2020 awards. 

The GIG Annual Award - is granted to mark a major contribution to government knowledge and information management during the previous year:  

• Nominations can be for a piece of work that relates to government information and has been developed for use within a single department or Agency or other body, such as a university. 
• Alternatively the nomination can be for something that relates to government information but has a wider application i.e. a concept which could usefully be introduced elsewhere.

• It can apply to a publication (in whatever format), a system development, development of a policy or procedure, a working practice, work on a committee, and so on. 

• The Awards are open to anyone, individuals or groups, working in government KIM functions, irrespective of whether they are members of the Government Information Group, CILIP, or the profession.

• They are also open to GIG members, students and others, who do not work in government, but who can produce evidence of a piece of work which meets the key criterion of being a major contribution to government knowledge and information management.

 In 2019, the Annual Award was presented to:

The GKIM Knowledge Management Task & Finish Group

For their collaborative work on developing a Maturity Model to support implementation of the HM Government Knowledge Principles.

 The GIG Judging Panel were struck by how well the team of 19 volunteers, from a range of government departments and Agencies, had come together to work creatively and collaboratively to develop a robust and usable tool which will raise the profile and understanding of knowledge management in government departments and beyond. All the members of the T&F Group had selflessly taken on this role in addition to their busy day jobs.

The second award is the GIG Lifetime Achievement Award which is given in recognition of a major contribution to government knowledge and information management over a sustained period.

The 2019 winner of the GIG Lifetime Achievement Award was:

Fiona Laing, Official Publications Curator at the National Library of Scotland.

 During a long career working with government information, Fiona has worked tirelessly to improve awareness of, and access to, Official Publications. She was also nominated for her work with SWOP (Scottish Working Forum on Official Publications) as well as her outreach and training work and as a CILIP mentor. Fiona was also named the Scottish Library & Information Professional of the Year for 2019.

This is an ideal opportunity to achieve wider recognition for the innovation, hard work and commitment which can be found by those working with government information and official publications. Nominations are welcomed from individuals and teams working in the government KIM function and beyond, so please consider submitting a nomination.

This year the closing date for nominations for the 2020 GIG awards is 30 June 2020.

It is anticipated that the winners will receive their Awards at an event in the autumn (usually the GIG AGM).
